It has been three years since the last mirror I owned was taken down from its wall. It must have been almost seventeen-years old, though it never showed its age. This is probably why I despised it so much. Perhaps if this mirror grew age-spots and if the wooden frames wrinkled and withered away over the years, perhaps then I would have kept it. But all I saw in that mirror was my beauty and tenacity melting away into a scraggly, veined memory of what used to be. I don't enjoy telling this story. I suppose I'm afraid of reliving the event, of some sorta onset of 'post-traumatic stress'. I tell it here now because of two reasons. The first reason is that I recently watched a documentary film, Touching the Void. It's a story of two men who were determined to be the first to climb Siula Grande - a mountain, and a deathtrap. This journey took both men to hell and back. It was the intensity of the fear, the hopelessness, and the determination that gripped me tight and never let go until their journey was over. I went to purchase a dog the other-- Oh lord, I shouldn't say "purchased". That sounds a little off. Unless I keep the thing in a handbag, only taking it out to dress it as Super Mario characters, sharing the ensuing hilarity on Instagram. Yeah, let's change that word. So we're in this glee club/fight club kinda thing. It's kinda greasy and seedy, but also exciting and life-gel electrifying. There's like, 30 of us, or something ridiculous, and we all go down these stairs in the dank darkness of some Sydney alley in the middle of the night to do this glee club things of ours. Remember that time we sat on the bench together, waiting for the bus? You were quiet, like you always were, and I thought nothing of it. But then you turned to me, an unreadable look in your eyes, and you asked me what I liked most about life. I just stared at you, unsure how to answer. Midnight has always been my favorite time of night. Where everything is drenched in suffocating darkness, except for the lucky places decorated with bright orange street lights. The dark untouched places hiding secrets and wandering eyes and obscuring figures that have never been, or always were. I loved the feeling of the bitter coldness that sinks into your skin and chills you bones. Turning warm peach skin to cool pasty white. Twisting any blossoming summer beauty into a wilting winter bloom.
